Creating our own amazing experiences

On the way out of the Slice of Lime office, you’ll see the words in the picture above. “Create Amazing Experiences.”

This is how we think about all things at our company. We apply it in three ways:

  1. We want the websites and web/mobile apps that we work on to be outstanding experiences for our clients’ users.
  2. We want our clients to feel that their experience with us, our process, and our people, was amazing.
  3. We want to create amazing experiences for our team.

Creating amazing experiences for the Slice of Lime team takes many forms. We have superb benefits and vacation plans, we encourage education and growth (we recently sent a couple of Slice of Limers to New York City to chat with senior Facebook people about what’s next for mobile), and we simply have a lot of fun together.

A couple of weeks ago, we had our “Holiday Party” at a luxury home in Winter Park. Big enough to sleep everyone and their families, we lounged around for a snowy weekend, made elaborate meals, reflected on what a great year 2011 was for us, and chatted about the future.

Life is made up of many experiences. At Slice of Lime, we strive to make our “work life” exceptional, unique, and rewarding – an “amazing experience.” Here’s to 2012 and the experiences that lie ahead.

A great experience is in the details

At Slice of Lime, we love creating amazing experiences. This applies to the projects we build, but also to the feeling we want our clients to have as we take them through our process. A great experience means that attention has been paid to every level of detail.

We apply this philosophy to the very first “Discovery” meeting we have with a new client. In these meetings we explore the target audience and goals of the project. A lot of information is exchanged and notes are furiously taken during the process.

Slice of Lime teamed up with Tinkering Monkey to create a one-of-a-kind notebook for our clients to use during this meeting. They created a hot iron brand of the Slice of Lime logo (above) and pressed it into the heavy duty cardboard cover of each threaded notebook.

Running your fingers over the letter-pressed lime is a wonderfully tactile experience and a great introduction to what Slice of Lime is all about. We love how Tinkering Monkey helped take our “brand” to a new level and we enjoy passing out these notebooks to clients as we kick off a new project with them. It’s all in the details…

Experiencing our clients first-hand

At Slice of Lime, every project starts with strategy. Who’s the target audience? What are the goals of the project? Who are the competitors? The answers to these questions can be unravelled during our Discovery meeting with a client. However, nothing beats experiencing a client’s product or service first-hand. To immerse yourself in a client’s world can prove to be invaluable when thinking through the strategy, design, and even the coding of a website.

Such is the case for a recent client of ours. Vermont Quarries is the largest white marble quarry in North America. They have a rich history and tradition stemming from over 100 years of production.

As we embarked on the redesign of their website, we decided to take a trip to Danby, Vermont to see the quarry first hand. You can watch our trip to the quarry in the video above.

We got to meet the staff in the corporate office as well as the union workers in the mine. We witnessed the full process a slab of white marble countertopgoes through from being cut from the earth, sliced to size, and ultimately polished for distribution. From this experience, our thoughts on how to structure the site, represent the company, and highlight the marble has begun to crystalize.

We strive to create amazing experiences for our clients and their customers. Connecting with our client’s business on a deeper level helps make that possible.

Allstate BCS Championship

Slice of Lime worked alongside Prediculous and Leo Burnett to create the 2012 Allstate BCS Championship Challenge. Slice of Lime created the strategy, information architecture, and user experience wireframes for both the web and mobile versions of the Facebook application.

This was a fun project to be a part of and great Facebook game! See for yourself.

TEDxMileHigh

TEDxMileHigh showcases Colorado’s maverick thinkers and doers, risk takers, professional athletes, entrepreneurs and innovators, humanitarians, creative performers and many more extraordinary people. It was an honor for Slice of Lime to volunteer our time creating the strategy, design, and development for the new TEDxMileHigh website. The website features videos and photos of the fantastic TEDxMileHigh speakers, a community blog, and information on the upcoming event in 2012.

We architected the website so that it can scale over time, allowing TEDxMileHigh to toggle between two modes; “conference registration” and “conference in progress”. The layout and “calls to action” on the site dynamically change based on which mode the website is in. Speakers can easily be archived and form fields can be turned on to collect nominations for future speakers. With this structure, the website should serve as a great foundation as the organization grows over time.
