TechStars is a summer program that helps get a small set of startups funded and off the ground while learning from the best. Slice of Lime has worked closely with TechStars for the last three years, including doing a previous version of the website. Slice of Lime re-invented the TechStars website this year to reflect the hands-on “getting things done” mentality of this summer program.
Design
Familiar graphical elements associated with a busy workplace are used throughout the site. Scotch tape holds up a list of mentors, a Polaroid photo highlights featured stories, a torn piece of paper with duct tape shows a list of the latest things happening at TechStars. Hand drawn arrows and whiteboard markers sitting at the bottom of the design help continue this theme.

Development
TechStars is completely driven by Wordpress. Every time a “mentor” is added as a page to the website, the small photo of the mentor automatically shows up on the homepage.
Similarly, as new companies are added to the site, they show up in relevant places throughout the site without any extra coding needed. With the flexibility found within Wordpress, TechStars founder, David Cohen, had no problem keeping the site updated with fresh data throughout the year.

We had a wonderful time building this site and working closely with the TechStars teams this summer. We made some great friendships and look forward to continuing our support of the program in future years.

Gnip is radically simplifying the way companies access and integrate the web’s data for use in social and business applications.
Strategy
We began the Gnip redesign with a focus on target demographic and goals. While it was clear that one goal was to maintain the playful spirit that is part of the Gnip culture, it would also be important to attract CTOs and CEOs to Gnip’s solutions and products. Therefore, the old site’s homepage tagline “Making data portability suck less” and complicated chart needed to go (see image below).

We replaced the headline with the more straight-forward, “Data for the Real-time Web” and focused on guiding the user to try Gnip for free and to learn more about how Gnip works. A step by step animation on the homepage would help to tell the Gnip story progressively while keeping the amount of viewable text on the homepage to a minimum.
Design
While the headline had changed to be more corporate, we maintained Gnip’s fun culture through the use of cartoon imagery. In-page navigation allows users to learn more about Gnip without leaving the homepage. A character on the homepage gestures to all of the services that Gnip can easily tie into. Icons were used to illustrate Gnip’s features and benefits (see image below).

We refined the Gnip logo, added the tagline “Delivering the Web’s Data”, and chose a new color scheme to bring a more professional feel to the website.

Development
In order to demonstrate how Gnip works, we developed an application using jQuery, AJAX, and XML to show activity that is happening on Gnip’s servers in real time. This not only shows that there are many transactions happening through Gnip, but also highlights popular companies that Gnip works with such as Flickr and Twitter. The end result is a module that captivates both the CTO and the CEO of a potential new client.

It was a pleasure working with the team at Gnip. They have a powerful set of solutions and products and the new marketing website has lead to a boost in new leads interested to learn more.

Foundry Group is a venture capital firm focused on making investments in early-stage information technology, Internet and software startups. Their passion is working alongside entrepreneurs to give birth to new technologies and to build those technologies into industry-leading companies.
Slice of Lime was responsible for the strategy, design, and development of the new Foundry Group website.
In order to achieve Foundry Group’s goal to become a valuable resource, we created “The Foundry Group Blog”. Using the blog, any one of the partners can create articles related to the venture capital world.

Another way to achieve transparency was to put Foundry Group’s team front and center. A photo of the entire team is featured on the homepage and the “Team” page offers each partner’s direct email address and full bio.
This was a rewarding project for us to work on and a great opportunity to work even closer with the extremely intelligent folks that make up Foundry Group. It put a smile on our faces to see, just after launch, PE Hub named the site “the best VC website…ever.”

Pike Research, based locally in the Boulder area, provides Cleantech market intelligence and research. Pike Research worked with the Slice of Lime team to created the strategy, design, and development for their new website.
Strategy
We began our planning of the Pike Research site knowing that we would need to account for later growth phases. The first phase would include several levels of registered users, content available only to registered users, newsletter content, and a user experience that would allow for e-commerce integration in the future. Another major goal was to create an attention-getting and informative homepage. The research topics covered by Pike can be expansive, so giving the user a quick glance at the major topics was important. We accomplished this goal by creating a five-tiered focus area that the user could interact with to learn more about the five most current research topics.

We identified two main types of users for the new Pike site; Registered Users and Non-registered Users. Registered users would have full access to report summaries and details with the option to obtain both Free and Paid reports. Non-registered users would only have access to limited information and to the free reports offered by Pike Research. Of course, registration is free, but required for full research access.
Apart from the research reports offered by Pike Research, the new site is also home to news, blog posts, and consulting information.
Design
The design we created needed to speak to the environmental aspects of Pike Research. The final design’s colors, white space, and minimal environmental illustrations effectively communicate their ‘green’ message. This allows the research to speak for itself with the design in a supporting role. Choosing the perfect set of icons is both fun and challenging. We went through multiple icons sets using both stock and in-house created options. The task here was to find something that was a balance between industrial, illustrated, and tech.
Development
One major requirement was to make the site scalable, allowing the Pike Research team to update and grow not only their offered reports but the overall page content of the site. We were able to completely mask the fact that the site completely is driven by WordPress, which involved some tweaking of WordPress code in a several places. To create the home page focus area, we customized jQuery code to rotate between the five research topics until the user interacts with the 5 buttons below – at which point they gain full control. Several custom WordPress plug-ins were also created to handle aspects of the report detail pages. This was a first here at Slice of Lime in creating custom WordPress plug-ins, and something we will be doing more of in the future.
It was a pleasure working with Clint of Pike Research and we look forward to continuing to grow the site in the future.

From pilot projects to distributed, multi-team programs, Rally Software Development’s family of Agile lifecycle management solutions gives teams the visibility and collaboration needed to formalize and scale Agile development practices that deliver high-value software in rapid iterations.
Slice of Lime is responsible for the strategy, design, and development for the new Rally Software Development website.
We started with a strategy process around the new target demographic and goals of the website. One of the core takeaways from this process was that Rally needed to appeal to a broader range of audiences, or “personas”. The main personas that were identified were:
- Project Managers
- Developers
- QA/Testers
- Product Managers
- VPs of Development
We also decided that it was important for the website to not only pitch Rally’s products, but to also be a resource for people to educate themselves on what “agile development” really means and how it can benefit a company.
Once the goals and target demographic were established, we began an “Information Architecture” and “Wireframing” process.

The information architecture helped us identify the core pages of both the website and the content management tool that we would be building to manage dynamic content.

The wireframes helped us identify core elements that needed to exist on each page and the priority of those elements.
Once we were in agreement on the information architecture and wireframes, we moved into design.

We went through several rounds of design and candidly discussed which elements from the designs were working the best to match the culture of Rally and to speak to their goals and target demographic.

One of the major design elements on the homepage was the option to browse by “personas”. Using a dropdown menu, a user can view a version of the homepage that speaks to who they are using real Rally client testimonials:

Rally’s product pages offer clear calls to action to Buy, Sign Up for Free, or View a Demo:

Additionally, these pages show relevant links at the bottom for classes, services, blog posts, and downloads that apply to the product they’re learning about at that moment.
Slice of Lime built a custom content management system to control documents, events, and news (among other things) that show up on the Rally Software Development website.

The “Downloads” section of the website doubles as a lead generation tool, passing contact information through SalesForce before allowing visitors of the site to view a document.
Slice of Lime worked with Rally to make sure reporting was setup on each page to track the path users were taking through the site and at which point those users opted to sign up for a free trial or download a document.
The site was coded using “web standards” making it fast loading, easy to update, and indexible by search engines like Google.
There’s plenty more to discover at Rally Software Development and new features are being rolled out almost every week. Check out the site and let us know what you think. This project was challenging and one of our favorites to work on this year.

Finally.
Slice of Lime originally included mobile applications and websites as one of our offerings when we started the company in 2001. We built a couple of applications that were well received, such as “Mobile Snow”, which delivered the snow report to your cell phone, Palm Pilot, or Pocket PC in the morning. It received the highest possible rating from Palm and the Flash-driven Pocket PC version was featured in a book entitled “Advanced PHP for Flash.”
Alas, we were about 7 years ahead of our time.
Now, we’re excited to include iPhone web optimization as one of our services. To kick off this announcement, we’ve optimized our own site.

Special considerations need to be taken when building an iPhone optimized website. For example, our contact page featured above is more useful with icons that help you reach us. Tapping the “Find Us” icon opens the Google Maps iPhone application, shows you where we are, and give you directions on how to get to us from your current location.
We’re excited to announce this new service and look forward to building more iPhone optimized websites. To learn more, take out your mobile device and call us at 303.413.0701!
If you don’t have an iPhone, but want to see the site in action, you can go to here.

TechStars is an organization that accepts 10 startup companies every summer and offers seed funding, mentorship, and great connections. Slice of Lime is a 2008 TechStars sponsor and we will be offering our time to each of the accepted companies to talk about their web strategy, design, and development. Additionally, we were brought on to create a new website for TechStars.
We started the project by sitting down with David Cohen, the founder of TechStars, and discussing the overall strategy and target demographic of the website. It was clear that a strong call to action to apply was the most important. Featuring the amazing TechStars mentors and organization details were a close second. We also felt it was important to use pictures from the previous year to help show what the summer is really like. We decided to stay away from polished photos and leaned towards photos showing the 2007 TechStars in action.

We established a simple information architecture and spent time refining the homepage wireframe, the most important page of this site.
Since one of David’s requirements was to manage the content on most of the pages, we agreed that WordPress would be the best tool for the job.

Slice of Lime configured WordPress so that David could manage mentors, for example, in one place. The website would then instantly create an individual mentor page, a page that listed ALL of the mentors, and a scrollable mentor list on the homepage.

Leveraging the same features of WordPress that we used for mentors, Slice of Lime configured WordPress so that David could also manage previous TechStars companies. With a few clicks, company descriptions, images, Flickr photos, graduation year, RSS feeds, and even Slice of Lime’s job listing application, TopShelf, can be added to the site.
The site was fun to work on and reinforced our appreciation for WordPress as more than just a blogging tool. We’re looking forward to getting to know the new 2008 TechStars!

The Van Heyst Group (VHG) is a full service creative agency that transforms intellectual content into high-level forums and conferences. The hallmarks of VHG are its abilities to convene the most respected individuals within their fields and to integrate diverse perspectives, ultimately driving meaningful conversation across all disciplines.
Slice of Lime was brought on to help create a website that showcased VHG’s services as well as its impressive client list and speakers. We started the project with a kick-off meeting to discuss their overall goals and target demographic.

From there, we compiled the information architecture and page wireframes. These acted as our roadmap as we jumped into design.

One of VHG’s goals was to have fresher, dynamic content on the site. We achieved this in two places; the “VHG Dashboard” and the “Speakers” page. The “Speakers” page, shown above, dynamically pulls relevant news articles from the web using the speaker’s full name. We leveraged the Google AJAX Search API to implement this functionality.
The VHG Dashboard is driven by WordPress and will grow over time as VHG adds articles and categories referencing their numerous projects and activities.

Arcstone Partners provide the highest quality, most thorough and defensible valuations in the industry. Slice of Lime was brought on to create a website that reflected Arcstone Partners’ professionalism, passion, and expertise in valuations.

We kicked this project off by bringing the Arcstone Partners team through a simple questionnaire. Issues such as their target demographic, goals of the site, differentiators, and competitors were explored. After this exercise, it was clear that the site needed to state clearly that they were valuation experts and appeal to financial professionals (CFOs, Corporate Attorneys, Venture Capitalists, etc.).

While the homepage greets you with “Valuation solved,” we felt that it would take more than just strong copywriting to establish Arcstone Partners as an industry expert. Slice of Lime built a “Valuation Articles” section, which serves as their blog. This is where the Arcstone Partners staff can shine by voicing their opinions in real-time on what is going on in the industry.

Slice of Lime also gave Arcstone Partners the ability to attach relevant whitepapers with their posts to further engage their site visitors. Lastly, comments can be left for each post to encourage discussion and connect Arctone Partners with their audience that much more.

Return Path is an entire company devoted to one thing: keeping the world safe for email marketing.
They look at the problems facing the email marketing industry and work to solve them. Sometimes that requires innovative technologies. Sometimes it just requires thinking about things in a different way. Usually, it requires both. That’s why they offer a range of different solutions.

To communicate all of their solutions as belonging to one parent company, Slice of Lime worked to move Return Path’s various websites under one roof. We started by creating a Strategy Document, Technical Specifications, and Information Architecture. One decision we arrived at early was that we needed to allow visitors to browse Return Path’s content both by Industry and by Audience.

By allowing visitors to state “Who They Are” or “What They’re Interested In”, navigating Return Path’s solutions became much more intuitive. We also added a pull down menu and search box on every page that makes it easy for a visitor to jump to other areas of the site quickly.

Next, we set out to achieve Return Path’s other goal, to be an information leader in all things email. We created the “Email Marketing Water Cooler”, a blog that hosts a steady stream of useful articles by the various members of the Return Path staff. Prominent links to sign up for the blog via RSS and Email are located throughout the site.

To power the front-end, a robust management tool was created by Slice of Lime. The blog was built using Movable Type. All page content, whitepapers, events, careers, and other items are managed through a custom built password-protected administration tool. Most areas of the site, including documents available for download, can easily be managed by non-technical staff at Return Path.
The new Return Path website has opened to much praise from industry leaders with comments such as “Simple, clean layout, easy to navigate, and I particularly like the interactive quiz/contact forms.” and “This site is the new poster child for how a B2B site should be.”

Slice of Lime worked on the design and development of the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Colorado website. Since entrepreneurial success is uncertain and the vast majority of entrepreneurial endeavors fail, Entrepreneurs Foundation of Colorado decided to approach the problem in a unique fashion. Rather than wait for success to encourage philanthropic activity, they created a new program to help all entrepreneurs contribute early in the creation of their companies to the long term health and sustainability of Colorado. Taligen Therapeutics is a development stage biotechnology company with novel technology to modulate and regulate activation of the “complement system”. Complement is a critical component in the initiation of inflammation. Although complement activation and inflammation are a normal part of the body’s defense against infection and injury, inappropriate complement activation leading to inflammation is a major contributor to a large number of human diseases. Because the product is still in development, the website is designed to highlight the technology behind the product as well as the credentials of the people involved in the project. Additionally, Slice of Lime developed a content management system that allows non-technical staff at Taligen Therapeutics to easily add, modify, and delete news, press releases, and announcements.

Slice of Lime designed and developed the Ask the VC blog. Ask the VC, co-authored by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson, discusses relevant issues in the venture capital and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Brad and Jason have been working together since 2000 when Jason joined Mobius Venture Capital, a venture capital firm that Brad co-founded. They started writing together on Brad’s Feld Thoughts blog (another blog designed and developed by Slice of Lime) sometime in 2005 with their Term Sheet Series. After several other series about issues facing venture capital backed companies, Jason and Brad decided to start AsktheVC.The site features “speech bubble” design elements to highlight the back-and-forth dialogue encouraged on the site. An AJAX form on the homepage makes it easy to submit questions without leaving the page. Since its launch last week, the site has already received an overwhelming amount of questions for Brad and Jason. Ask the VC should prove to be a valuable resource for those wanting insight on the venture capital world.

Slice of Lime designed and developed the Newmerix website. The goal of this project was to communicate Newmerix’s range of products, gather leads through SalesForce, and to give the Newmerix staff a way to easily update pages moving forward. Slice of Lime designed the “look and feel” of the website and built a custom back-end content management tool. Through this tool, non-technical employees at Newmerix can update news, press releases, and upload whitepapers. Slice of Lime then tied all data collection into Newmerix’s existing SalesForce account.
